Because Beauty

(I do not intend to belittle any person, title or event. Just personal feelings. Criticism is welcome.)

I looked at their plastic smiles and choreographed waves
And wondered why they aroused no joy or admiration or enchantment in me,
While the world was celebrating “beauty”
Why was I so incapable of lauding the wonder she promises to be?
But I didn’t have to wonder too long, because it dawned upon me soon.
Because beauty doesn’t depend on scores,
Because a “judgement” doesn’t penetrate the soul.
Because beauty never did and never will have standards,
It need not be recognized with awards.
Because beauty to me will always be
The smile worn while your heart cracked inside your being,
The “I’ll be back soon” whispered at the airport;
The “waiting for you to get back”, even though dinner’s cold.
Because beauty will always be your stretch marks,
Your passions and desires, the pain hidden beneath your scars.
Beauty is your flushed cheek after the first kiss,
Beauty is holding your hand through the crowded streets.
Because beauty is your kindness that warms the heart,
Beauty is all that remains when everything else falls apart.

Forbidden Expectations

final

And yet again, we expect what we shouldn’t,

Love whom we mustn’t,

Pray for the impossible,

And again, the broken laws are so palpable.

Hoping in the most hopeless moments,

Reminiscing the beginning even in the end,

Cherishing those incomplete memories,

We live on by ignoring so many vagaries.

All of it as futile as futile can be,

Yet there continues those euphoric dreams,

For they complete our beings,

They surpass our limitations,

And so, there lives forever the forbidden expectations.

The above sketch is by Anwesha Saha (owner of As The Ink Flows).

To a Child

I was baffled; disappointed with life,

Didn’t expect anywhere, solace to find;

The blows were hard on me,

The extent of pain I couldn’t deem.

Walking alone, drowning into  perplexity,

Suddenly my gaze caught yours curiously.

You were frowning, struggling to get that shoe right,

Your impatience you didn’t hide.

You saw me staring, with a subtle ridicule,

But, you saw at the same time what no one could.

Though you were desperate to get the shoe right,

You looked up and gave me a smile.

Words will fall short, and I’ll be a called a fool,

If I were to tell how much I owe you.

For you made me see, for that fleeting moment,

The child within me, calm and innocent.

Maybe life won’t get any better for you or for me,

But innocently smiling we will forever be.

It

What is it that whispers in the silence?

In the soundless night, what is it that I sense?

What is it that turns off the lights?

And makes daylight cringe back in fright?

What is it that makes musings dance-

Dance in glee’s melancholic trance?

Bizarre I know it is, perpetually,

But, what it really is, is still a query.

It comes and goes, amidst ‘yes’ and ‘no’s;

It builds and breaks; stagnates and flows;

Dark and light; and low and high-

I wish I could drown it in the ocean,

And bid it an everlasting good bye.

To Lie

Difficult it is to find sense

In a labyrinthine jungle dense,

How hard it is to take back words spoken,

Harder still to mend promises broken,

Garrulous mouths are hard to quieten,

Imbecile brains are hard to enlighten,

Difficult it is to make morose souls smile,

Utterly impossible to make the dead rise,

Painstaking it is to make minutes pass

When life treats you like a futile mass,

Gruesome it is to live the infinite night,

Have a chat with the darkness and combat your fright,

It is formidably tough to apologize,

It is but perilously easy to lie.

To the World, With Love

Stranded in the middle of no where,
Yet, I could transcend everywhere.
Woes belittled the ever little soul,
Yet, I found a path to lead me back home.

The same old twisted tales,
The same old piercing nails;
My very own clouds followed by rainbows;
Deep in my sorrows drowned, meekly my poem flows.

Another futile promise not to care,
Another dwindling thought sways in the air.
Of bliss and of melancholy,
The stories you tell so artfully-
Giving me faith, rekindling my hope,
Resonating within me, you’re my abode.

The First Time

Angels at my doorstep
And music in my heart;
A sweet gaily smile
A feeling purely divine;

Forsaking the pains,
Shaking off the hurt;
Singing a joyous tune,
I’m off to start anew.

Now that the dried leaves
Have finally fallen to the ground,
I’ll brighten up the tree,
I won’t fear the eerie clouds above.
Won’t fear what’s written in the stars.
For once, I’ll make the ‘first time’ last.
